Remittances sent to Bangladesh from expatriate workers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) rose by 15.9 percent in the last financial year, according to central bank statistics.
The remittances sent to Bangladesh from UAE totaled 512.6 million U.S. dollars in the fiscal 2005-06 (July 2005-June 2006), local news agency UNB quoted figures released by Bangladesh Bank, the central bank, as saying Sunday.
The statistics reveal that each of 400,000 non-resident Bangladeshis in the UAE sent around 1,280 dollars per annum back home on average. Bangladeshis make up about 10 percent of the UAE's 4.1 million population.
