Zambia expects 140,000 tons of wheat output in 2006
font size

The wheat output of Zambia this year has been estimated at 140,000 tons compared with 100,000 tons produced last year, local newspaper said on Friday.

"This is a very significant increase in production when you also compare to production levels of 30,000 tons per annum in the early 1990s and 70,000 tons five years ago," Zambia National Farmers Union Executive Director Songowayo Zyambo was quoted by The Post as saying.

Zambia's wheat demand exceeds 200,000 tons annually and the shortfall is met by imports. At present the normal output of maize is 150,000 tons in the country.
