China calls for enhancing UN ability to tackle new threats
font size

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao called in Helsinki on Monday for the enhancement of the United Nations' ability to tackle new threats and challenges in a bid to ensure global safety.

Addressing the closing ceremony of the summit of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), Wen said China was persisting in solving international disputes through dialogue and negotiations, and was against the use of force or threat of force.

He said China was in favor of deepening anti-terrorism cooperation, rooting out the causes of terrorism while fighting it, and was against double-standards in fighting terrorism.

The Chinese premier called on the international community to safeguard the authority and effectiveness of the exiting multi-lateral agreement on non-nuclear proliferation by formulating comprehensive export control systems and strengthening the enforcement of these systems.

He also urged ASEM members to cooperate in preventing and controlling infectious deceases, especially bird flu.

As for the Korean Peninsula, Wen said it was the key to the security in Northeast Asia and that the most important task now was to resume the six-party talks as soon as possible.

He requested all parties concerned to keep cool-minded and exercise self-restraint.

Meanwhile, Wen said diplomatic negotiations were the best way to solve the Iranian nuclear issue, while Iran should pay enough attention to the world's concerns and adopt constructive measures.

On the Palestinian issue, the Chinese premier said China held that all parties concerned should solve their disputes through political negotiations on the basis of the "land for peace" principle.
