Aging population in China to increase to 174 million by 2010

An Aging Population Services Development Program for China's 11th Five-Year Plan was published by China's National Working Commission on Ageing on September 21.

According to this program, Chinese over 60 years old are growing in number. They will number 174 million by 2010, making up 12.78 percent of the entire population by 2010. By then, those over 80 years old will number 21.32 million, accounting for 12.25 percent of the entire aging population.
