The Zimbabwean telecommunications industry has the potential to become the biggest foreign currency earner for the country in the near future, a telecommunications official said on Sunday.
The official with the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe said they are making efforts to mobilize financing that could be used in improving the fortunes of the industry.
Taungana Ndoro, a public relations officer with the authority, said the telecoms industry was expected to take advantage of the conference to seek assistance from financial institutions so that it could improve operations.
"Despite the economic challenges, business in the telecommunications industry is still good, especially with many Zimbabweans in the Diaspora regularly communicating with relatives back home," he said. He said the communications industry is failing to meet demand for their services due to shortages of foreign currency in the country, but said once the situation improves, they will try to service as many people as possible.
There are also efforts to woo investors because the more the industry expands, the more foreign currency it generates, he said.
