Crabs from Taihu Lake in Suzhou, east China's Jiangsu Province, were exported to the United States for the first time on October 10, said the State Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (SAQSIQ) on Thursday.
The crabs, weighing 100 kilograms and worth 2,500 U.S. dollars, were transported to Los Angeles after being inspected by the local inspection and quarantine department, said the agency.
A total of 120 tons of crabs, worth 860,000 U.S. dollars, were exported to countries and regions such as Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, the United States, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan from Aug. 29 to Oct. 13.
The local inspection and quarantine department has set strict standards for crab breeding. It has also established a special team to conduct inspection and quarantine of the crabs to ensure timely delivery.
Taihu Lake is the third largest freshwater lake in China. The crabs bred in the lake have won a nationwide reputation in the domestic market.
