President Hu Jintao expressed hope yesterday that Chinese and French youth will strengthen exchanges to help promote the two countries' friendly relationship.
"Youths are the future of a nation and the hope of mankind," Hu said whilst meeting young Chinese and French scientists together with French President Jacques Chirac at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing last night.
"As the Sino-French relations are undergoing a robust growth, the youth exchanges will surely help intensify bilateral relations in the new century," said Hu.
Around 100 young scientists arrived in Beijing shortly before Chirac's state visit to China as part of a Youth Exchange Programme between the two countries.
Premier Wen Jiabao had proposed the programme in December last year when he visited France. He was echoed by Chirac and French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin.
Under the programme, 400 youths from the two countries aged between 18 and 35 will participate in exchanges and visits this year and next year to deepen knowledge and understanding of each country's politics, economy, art, science and technology.
Hu encouraged them to innovate in science and technology and contribute to the progress of their countries.
Chirac praised China's achievements in scientific and technological innovations, saying it was the basis for the country's rapid economic growth.
He said development needs peace and stability, which is no exception for China, Europe and the world.
China and France are working in the international arena to promote world peace and stability, said Chirac, who urged political leaders in other countries to make joint efforts to the same end.
