Malaysian ports registered a 11.2 percent growth in terms of 20-foot equivalent unit (TEU) handled in the first nine months, a senior official said Wednesday.

From January to September this year, Malaysian ports handled 9, 980,678 TEUs compared with 8,973,605 TEUs handled during the same period last year, Transport Minister Chan Kong Choy said.

Two major ports, Port Klang in Selangor state and Pelabuhan Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) in Johor state, registered double digit growth of 14.3 percent and 10.2 percent respectively during the period, Chan told reporters in the administrative center of Putrajaya.

"This is very encouraging. For the fourth quarter, traditionally a very busy period, we can also expect double digit growth," he said at a press conference.

Malaysian ports are expected to register some 13 million TEUs by the end of this year.
