To maintain a healthy bilateral relationship serves the common interests of both China and the United States and helps to safeguard world peace and prosperity, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said in Beijing Thursday.

When asked to comment on the U.S. mid-term elections, spokeswoman Jiang Yu said that it is the U.S. internal affairs but China hopes the new U.S. congress can play a constructive role in pushing forward the China-U.S. relations.

It is a consensus for both the Republicans and Democrats to develop sound and stable China-U.S. relations, Jiang said.

China is willing to strengthen bilateral exchanges and cooperation with the U.S. side in various fields, Jiang said.

It is reported that Democrats have captured both chambers of the U.S. Congress in the mid-term elections, retaking control of the two chambers for the first time in 12 years.
