Johannesburg bourse ends week on positive note

The Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE) ended the week on a positive note, lifted by ebullient resources stocks.

The all share index ended 0.57 percent higher at 23,819.21. Resources rose 0.9 percent, with the gold and platinum mining indices jumping 1.78 percent and 1.61 percent respectively.

Industrials climbed 0.55 percent. Financials were flat (down 0. 01 percent), however, with the banks index ending 0.6 percent softer.

The rand was bid at 7.21 per U.S. dollar from 7.24 when the JSE closed on Thursday, while gold was quoted at 629.73 dollars a troy ounce from 627.15 dollars at the JSE's last close.

On the all share index, 78 shares were up, 57 were down and 27 were unchanged. There were 23 advances on the top 40 index and 15 decliners, while three counters closed flat.

With Friday's gains, the all share index was 0.97 percent up on the week. It is up 2.06 percent for the month and 31.63 percent on the year.
