Traffic mishap, workplace accidents and fires claimed 1,286 lives in Beijing in the first 10 months this year, down by 4.7 percent on last year's same period, according to local safety production watchdog.
Figures from the Beijing Municipal Safety Production Supervision Administration show that the city reported 1,157 traffic accidents, workplace accidents and fires in the January-October period, 46 less than the corresponding period of last year. The death toll dropped by 64 year-on-year.
Beijing reported 985 road accidents in the 10-month period, 73 less than that for last year's same period, and death toll of these accidents was 85 less than last year's corresponding period.
A total of 140 workplace accidents were reported in the city in the 10-month period, 15 more than last year's same period, and the death toll was 163, 18 more than last year's corresponding period.
The city reported 32 fire cases in the first 10 months, nine more than last year's same period, and the death was 34, six more than last year's corresponding period.
Beijing reported 15 coal mine accidents, claiming 21 lives, in the first ten months this year, according to the safety production watchdog.
An official with the Beijing Municipal Safety Production Supervision Administration said supervision would be intensified to curb occurrence of workplace accidents and other mishaps, and those work units which have potential accident risks would be urged to stop production and improve their safety measures.
From June to October this year, 200 people held accountable for concerned fatal accidents were prosecuted, removed from post, given administrative punishment and fined.
