The annual Christmas Light-Up on the streets of Singapore launched on Saturday night, beginning the city-state's seven-week-long "Christmas in the Tropics" extravaganza.

This extravaganza from Nov. 11 to Jan. 2, will be one to remember, with more than 60 festive events, including the city- state's longest and brightest Light-Up, festive performances, entertainment events, shopping specials, concerts and dance parties, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) said at a news conference on Friday.

This Christmas season is expected to attract more than 1.6 million visitors.

The STB has revealed that more than 820,000 tourists visited Singapore during the Christmas season last year while more than 20 percent of them specifically planned their trips to coincide with the year-end celebrations.

The Board also said that 22 percent of these tourists were repeat visitors.
