The United Nations said here on Monday it will give 77 million U.S. dollars to reinforce the cash-strapped and understaffed African Union (AU) peacekeeping forces in Sudan's western region of Darfur.
"We have agreed on two packages of support worth around 77 million dollars for the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS)," said Hedi Annabi, UN assistant secretary general for peacekeeping operations.
The support will be comprised of 22 million dollars of personnel fees and 55 million dollars of equipment fees, said Annabi at a press conference after a meeting of UN, AU and Sudanese officials at AU headquarters in Addis Ababa.
The Sudanese government, the United Nations and the African Union are holding consultations on the peacekeeping issue in Sudan's Darfur region. Sudan has said that assisting the current AU forces was the most suitable solution to the Darfur issue.
