China has made a great contribution to slowing down global climate change: FM spokeswoman

China has made a great contribution to international efforts to slow down global climate change, said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu on Tuesday

"The Chinese government has attached great importance to the climate change issue," Jiang said.

"We have joined the United Nations framework on climate change and the Kyoto agreement, and signed more than 50 international agreements on environmental protection,"she said.

The Chinese government has raised energy efficiency, developed renewable energy sources and planted more trees, the spokeswoman said.

Jiang said that China aimed to reduce the amount of energy used to generate each dollar of national income by 20 percent and major pollutants emission by 10 percent, both by the end of 2010.

She also called on developed countries which have yet to ratify the Kyoto Protocol to approve it as soon as possible and make their own contributions.
