Sino-Indian bilateral ties

I. Bilateral Political Relations

Supplement: In Feb. 2001, the second round of Sine-Indian dialogue on security was held in New Delhi.

On April 16, 2002, Chairman Li Peng, of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress met Mme Najma Heptulla Vice-Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, and Chairperson of the Council of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, who was invited to China to attend the 3rd annual meeting of the Peace Association of the Asian Parliaments.

On April 23,2002,the first round of anti-terrorist consultations was held in New Delhi between the responsible officials from the Chinese and Indian foreign ministries.

Between 28 and 29 May, 2003, the second meeting of the China-India Eminent Persons'Group was held in Beijing. Vice-Premier Cheng Qichen met the members of this group.

On June 4,2002, President Jiang Zemin met Indian Prime Minister Vajpayee, while attending the summit on the measures concerning the cooperation and trust between Asian countries in Alma-Ata.

On July 31,2002,Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan met Indian Foreign Minister Sinha as requested at the 9th ARF Foreign Ministers' Meeting.

On September 29, 2002, the 3rd security dialogue between China and India was held in Beijing.

Between 5 and 10 January 2003, Speaker of the Indian Lok Sabha Joshi paid an official friendly visit to China at the invitation of Chairman Li Peng. President Jiang Zemin, Chairman Li Peng and Premier Zhu Rongji met further expand cooperation in regional and international issues.

Between 13 and 14 February 2003, the 3rd China-India Eminent Persons'Group Meeting was held in New Delhi.

Between 20 and 27 April 2003, at the invitation of Central Military Commission Vice-Chairman, State Councilor and Defence Minister Cao Gangchuan, Indian Defence minister Fernandes visited China. Chairman of the Central Military Commission Jiang Zemin, Premier Wen Jiabao, Vice-Chairman of the Central Military Commission Guo Boxiong and Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing met him respectively. Both sides exchanged extensive views on military and bilateral relations between the two countries, as well as regional and international issues.

II. Following is the revised sub-title: Economic and Trade Relations as Well as Scientific, technological, Cultural and Tourist Cooperation between China and India

Supplement: In accordance with the statistics from China's General Administration of Customs, the total trade volume between China and India reached US$ 4.9 billion in 2002, up 37% from 2001, of which China's exports registered US$ 2.6 billion and its imports US$ 2.3 billion.

In addition, cultural and tourist exchanges between the two countries have witnessed rapid development. On March 28, 2002, China's Eastern Airlines officially opened direct flights between Beijing / Shanghai and New Delhi. On the same day, the Chinese government approved India as a country of destination for Chinese tourists going overseas on their own expenses. In December, Director-General of China's National Tourism Administration He Guangwei and Indian Tourist Minister Jagmohan signed in New Delhi the Memorandum of Understanding Concerning the Execution Plan for Chinese citizens Going on Organized Tours to India between the National Tourism Administration of the People's Republic of China and the Tourism Ministry of the Republic of India.

III. Sino-Indian Border Question
