Taiwan mayor's wife out of danger from car crash

The wife of a key Taiwan politician severely injured in a car crash is out of danger after receiving emergency treatment, according to a Taiwan hospital on Wednesday.

The hospital said that Shaw Hsiao-ling, wife of Taichung Mayor Jason C. Hu, is slowly recovering from a coma.

She was put on a life support system after being rushed to hospital, and now her heart and lung are showing signs of recovery, said doctors with the Taiwan Chi Mei Hospital in southern Taiwan.

The couple and two aides were injured in a car crash on Saturday night as they were heading back to Taichung after supporting Kuomintang Party opposition candidate Huang Chun-ying at an election rally. Huang is campaigning for mayor in the southern city of Kaosiung.

Hu suffered slight injuries to his head and hands, but Shaw was thrown from the car and trapped under the overturned vehicle, according to local media.

Doctors, who were obliged to amputate Shaw's smashed forearm and remove her spleen during emergency surgery soon after the accident, are continuing to give her intensive medical treatment.
