China will strengthen cooperation with Germany on public security affairs and law enforcement, especially in the field of anti-terrorism, said China's public security chief.

Zhou Yongkang, state councilor and public security minister, made the remarks when meeting with Guenther Beckstein, vice premier and interior minister of Bavaria, Germany, here on Friday afternoon.

Zhou said he hopes the police of the two countries can work more closely together.

Beckstein said Bavaria highly values its cooperation with China in law enforcement.

Beckstein added that the main purpose of his visit to China is to discuss bilateral cooperation with China's Foreign Ministry, Public Security Ministry and the Beijing Organizing Committee of the 2008 Olympic Games. The two sides exchanged views on the international security situation and the fight against terrorism.

Vice-Minister of Public Security Meng Hongwei also held a working talks with Beckstein before his meeting with Zhou. The two sides discussed bilateral cooperation on law enforcement and anti-terrorism.

Zhou said the public security and interior departments of the two countries have cooperated well in recent years, especially on international terrorism and transborder crime issues, and in training and technological exchanges.

By June 2005, the Ministry of Public Security had established cooperative relations with interior or police organs in 146 countries.

Beckstein is leading a delegation to China at the invitation of the Public Security Ministry.
