ITU Internet Report calls for coherent digital identity scheme
font size

The Internet Report launched by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on Wednesday called for more joint efforts to set up a coherent digital identity scheme.

The report, titled "digital.life," said the ideal digital identity scheme should be able to stimulate on-line interactions while protecting data and alleviating privacy concerns.

It noted that lawyers, corporate strategist, economists and governments have been in a hard bid to thwart illicit on-line activities and identity theft.

The report stressed the concern over the lack of limits on the collections of identity parameters on-line and over the unclear guidelines for the retention of data.

It urged for a digital identity management which is based on the use of partial identities depending on context and user choice.

The report was drafted by a team of analysts from ITU's Strategy and Policy Unit, covering chapters on "going digital," lifestyle, business, identity and living in the digital world.

It was launched on the sidelines of the ongoing ITU Telecom World 2006 show, which was slated from Dec. 4 to 8, teaming some 600 exhibitors and thousands of experts and professionals in the telecommunication sector.
