Hu Chunhua, 43, deputy Party secretary of the Tibet Autonomous Region, was yesterday appointed first secretary of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China (CYLC), a post many State leaders have once held.

Hu, a native of Central China's Hubei Province, has been working in Tibet since he graduated from Peking University in 1983.

Zhou Qiang, Hu's predecessor was appointed the acting governor of Central China's Hunan Province in September.

The youth league is a mass organization of advanced youth led by the Communist Party of China (CPC).

Hu Jintao, the CPC chief and president of China stayed at the Secretariat of Central Committee of CYLC for four years and held the post of first secretary from 1984 to 1985 before he was appointed secretary of the Guizhou provincial Party Committee. Hu was then relocated to the secretary of the Party Committee of Tibet before he became a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee in 1992.

Other leaders that rose from the youth league include Wang Zhaoguo, a member of the Political Bureau and vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the 10th National People's Congress, who held the post of first secretary from 1982 to 1984.

In another development, Wang Wulong, former deputy director of the Standing Committee of People's Congress of Jiangsu Province was deprived from his post and his Party membership, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection said yesterday.

Wang was found to have taken millions in bribery to reduce the land-use fee or given priority in land bidding with his influence of the post.
