China concerned about Fiji's political situation
font size

China on Thursday voiced its concern about the political situation in Fiji and called for a proper solution for social stability.

"We are concerned about the current situation in Fiji and hope that the parties concerned will work together and seek a proper solution to keep social stability," Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said.

Qin's comments came after Fiji's army commander Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama took over the government and executive authority on Tuesday in the country's fourth coup in nearly 20 years.

"China sincerely hopes that Fiji will maintain social stability and economic development," Qin said.

Qin said the one-China principle constituted the political foundation of China-Fiji relations.

"We appreciate the Fiji government's adherence to the one-China principle since the two countries forged diplomatic ties on Nov. 5, 1975," the spokesman said.
