The U.S. Senate approved legislation regulating the Super numbering system that men's suit makers have increasingly been using to tout superfine wool, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday.
Higher Super numbers translate to narrower fibers, which makers say are softer to the touch.
But industry groups and lawmakers have raised questions about the accuracy of the numbers, prompted in part by makers of superfine wool fabrics who are concerned about lower priced suits being labeled with Super numbers, said the report.
The legislation would codify guidelines issued by the International Wool Textile Organization, setting specific measurements for Super numbers up to Super 250s and would give the Federal Trade Commission the power to fine fabric suppliers, garment manufacturers and retailers that do not abide by the standards, the report said.
The legislation now goes to the president, according to the report.
