Fiji loses World Netball event
font size

Fiji has lost the right to host next year's world netball championships, which was due to be held in Suva in July next year.

According to Saturday's report from Fijilive, a Suva-based news service, the International Federation of Netball Associations announced that it withdrew the event following the coup in Fiji on Tuesday.

Netball Fiji president Alisi Tabete said it was a sad day for Fiji sports after years of working to bring the tournament to Fiji.

World Netball Championships CEO Mere Lomaloma said she would comment at a press conference on Sunday.

The federation said it deeply regrets having to shift the world championships, but the coup has left it with no choice.

There has been no decision yet about where the championships will be staged instead.

Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase was ousted on Tuesday after a year-long power struggle with military commander Bainimarama.

It was Fiji's fourth coup in 20 years.
