Romania must reduce its dependency on energy imports, said Romanian President Traian Basescu on Tuesday during a visit to a nuclear power plant.
"Even though, at present, we have a surplus capacity in the field of electricity production, we foresee that in the future, with the development of industrial production capacity and further economy revival, this surplus will be absorbed by the local market," Basescu said.
"And, therefore, we need to compensate the imports in the energy field with exports," the president added.
The Cernavoda plant, which is 150 km east of Bucharest and uses the Canadian technology known as CANDU, is the only nuclear power plant in Romania.
Basescu has drawn attention to the lack of optimization of energy consumption, both at household level and in the industrial sector ln the country.
