Liu Yandong, Vice Chairwoman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), urged for further promotion of Taiwan compatriots' understanding of the one-China principle on Thursday in Macao.

Liu made the remarks while meeting with leaders of overseas Chinese pro-reunification organizations worldwide on the sidelines of the ongoing two-day Overseas Chinese World Conference for Promoting Peaceful Reunification of China 2006 (Macao), which was opened here Thursday.

Macao's hosting of the conference for the first time displays the dedication made by the Macao-based pro-reunification organization to maintain the reunification of the motherland, the Chinese official said.

She expressed the wish that the Macao group would keep its patriotic tradition to make more effort in bridging the cross- Straits mutual-understanding.

Liu, head of the China Council for the Promotion of Reunification as well, expressed warm welcome to all the leaders of overseas pro-reunification organizations present at the conference, noting that they traveled a long journey to demonstrate their patriotism and determination to strive for China 's reunification.

She also expressed her hope that the overseas Chinese pro- reunification organizations will further strengthen the one-China stance holding by the international community and build a bridge of friendship and cooperation across the Taiwan Straits.

Some 170 Chinese pro-reunification groups have been set up in over 80 countries and regions so far.
