"Desinification" in Taiwan not to succeed, says Taiwan politician

The "desinification" policy outlined by the Taiwan authorities to sever cultural kinship between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan is unreasonable and will not succeed, a politician said in Beijing on Friday.

The "Taiwan consciousness" of some Taiwan young people is by no means equal to "Taiwan independence consciousness", said Chang Jung-kung, director of Mainland Affairs Division of the Kuomintang (KMT) on the sidelines of a youth forum for mainland and Taiwan young people.

More than 150 youth delegates from the mainland and Taiwan attended the one-day forum, the first exchange activity organized by youth organizations of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Kuomintang party.

"In fact, 'Taiwan consciousness' grows out of the particular culture in Taiwan which is closely linked with and inseparable from the traditional Chinese culture," said Chang.

Common prosperity, peace and stability on the mainland and Taiwan are linked with the fundamental interests of all Chinese people on both sides, he said.

Although some extreme political forces in Taiwan repeatedly obstructed cross-Strait exchanges, most of the Taiwan youth will not be misled by their extreme remarks because "young people today think by themselves," Chang said.

For a long period in history, information about the other side of the Taiwan Strait was biased. Now young people have more channels to know and understand their peers on the other side, he said.

"I believe growing exchanges between young people of both sides will greatly promote the sound development of cross-Strait relations," said Chang.
