Greece and France are working together closely for the adoption of a UN Security Council resolution that will protect journalists reporting from war zones and crisis areas, Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis said on Tuesday.
Bakoyannis made the remarks at a joint press conference with French Ambassador to Athens Bruno Delaye at the Greek Foreign Ministry.
Its adoption will be the best example of Greece's two-year participation in the UN Security Council, the foreign minister said.
Sponsored by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), the proposal was sent to the UN Security Council in September when Greece held the rotating presidency of the council.
Bakoyannis said that the Greek presidency has promoted the proposal with the support of permanent Security Council member France and found it positively received by other members.
It was now slated for further discussion over the coming days, the foreign minister said.
French Ambassador Delaye said the initiative to bring the proposal before the UN Security Council reflected the good and close cooperation between France and Greece.
According to the IFJ, 146 people working for the media were killed in 2006, most of them in Iraq.
