Indonesia's Aceh receives 5.9 bln USD pledged by donors
font size

Indonesia's province of Aceh has received over 5.9 billion U.S. dollars out of 7.1 billion U.S. dollars pledged by donors for reconstruction and rehabilitation after the 2004 tsunami disaster, relief agency said Friday.

Head of the Aceh Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Agency (BRR) Kuntoro Mangkusubroto said that the funds have already been allocated to a number of programs in the province.

"About 5.9 billion U.S. dollars have been allocated in programs, " he said.

"This indicates a high trust of the international community to Indonesia," he said.

Over 160,000 were killed and missing in the tsunami devastated the coastal area of the Aceh province on Dec. 26, 2004. The tragedy brought international solidarity in relief works in the oil-and-gas- rich province.

Donors pledged to donate over 7.1 billion U.S. dollars for the four-year reconstruction in Aceh.

Aceh has been implementing peace accord that was reached on Aug. 15 in Helsinki Finland, between the rebel and Jakarta.

On Tuesday, the restive province of Aceh is to commemorate the second anniversary of the tsunami.
