Israeli minister terms Iran sanctions as important decision
font size

In response to a UN Security Council resolution to impose sanctions on Iran, Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni said on Saturday that it was a very important decision to prevent Iran's nuclear program.

"The international community must keep showing decisiveness in the joint struggle until the goal of ending the Iranian nuclear program is achieved," Livni said.

Meanwhile, Defense Minister Amir Peretz called the resolution " a very important step."

"Pressure should continue to be applied on the international community to impose even more significant sanctions on Iran," he said.

The United Nations Security Council unanimously voted on Saturday to impose sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program. The resolution demands that Iran end all research on uranium enrichment, which can produce fuel for nuclear power plants as well as for bombs, and halt research and development that can make or deliver atomic weapons.

The resolution is under Article 41 of Chapter 7 of the UN Charter, which makes enforcement mandatory but restricts action to non-military measures. Sanctions would be lifted if Tehran in turn suspended "all enrichment related and reprocessing activities, including research and development."

Iran has vowed to continue its nuclear program, which it says is for peaceful purposes only.
