Jakarta bourse ends 2006 trading with new record

The Jakarta Stock Exchange marked the last trading day of the year with the composite index making a fresh record.

"This achievement is worth celebration. It reflects the rapidly growing market confidence," Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said in the closing ceremony at the bourse.

The composite index rose 2.3 points to close at 1,805.5 points.

Turnovers totaled 4.99 billion shares worth 2.7 trillion rupiah (303.3 million U.S. dollars).

Gainers beat losers 118 to 89, with 61 other issues left unchanged.
