2,360 gov't schools handed over to community in Nepal

The Nepali Department of Education has handed over the management of 2,360 government schools of 62 districts to the communities so far, the National News Agency, RSS reported Friday.

The government schools handed over to the communities comprise 1,973 primary schools, 208 lower secondary schools and 109 secondary schools.

According to Deputy Director of the School Management Branch Krishna Kapri, the department has handed over the management of 60 government schools since the month of August/September of the current fiscal year started in mid-July, and agreements to hand over more schools to the community has also been reached recently.

The government has started handing over the management of the government schools to the communities from the fiscal year 2002/03 to provide timely and standard education in those schools.

During the fiscal year 2003/04, the local communities refused to take over the management of the government schools due to the ongoing conflict in the country, but after the restoration of peace in the country, more and more communities are being attracted towards taking over the management of the schools, according to the RSS.
