China Enterprises Index surges to record high -- Jan. 2

Elevated by strong performance of banks and insurers on Chinese mainland, Hang Seng China Enterprises Index soared 293 points, or 2.83 percent, to close at 10,633.42 on Tuesday, the best close in history.

The index, initiated in August 1994 and readjusted on Sept. 11, 2006, tracks the overall performance of 37 Chinese mainland state-owned enterprises listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

Hang Seng China-Affiliated Corporations Index blasted up 80.25 points, or 2.41 percent, to close at 3,410.31.

The index tracks the performance of 31 locally listed companies with a significant equity interest held by entities in the Chinese mainland.

Hang Seng Mainland Composite Index rose 83.22 points, or 2.53 percent, to close at 3,368.65.

Introduced on Oct. 3, 2001 and readjusted on Sept. 11, 2006, Hang Seng Mainland Composite Index gauges the performance of 103 Hong Kong-listed companies with principal places of business in Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland.
