China's Changfeng plans to enter U.S. market in two years
font size

Chinese automaker Hunan Changfeng Motor Co. Ltd. is hoping to begin exports to the United States within two years, according to company chairman Li Jianxin.

The Shanghai-listed company had already begun talks with a U.S. partner, said Li, but he declined to offer further details.

He was speaking after Changfeng became the second Chinese automaker after Geely to debut at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS).

Changfeng, one of the biggest sports utility vehicle (SUV) manufacturers in China, hopes to enter the U.S. market with its SUVs and pickup trucks.

Li said participation in the auto show was the first step of the company's global strategy.

Li said Changfeng planned to produce 200,000 vehicles in China with sales income reaching 26 billion yuan in 2007.

Many analysts believe Chinese auto manufacturers face major difficulties in meeting U.S. safety requirements and quality standards.

Richard Wagoner, president of General Motors, said China's carmakers should be cautious before heading West because the quality of Chinese cars was still a major concern for the U.S. consumers.
