Cheeky Japanese strip show sparks online furore
font size

An impromptu striptease by Janet Jackson at the 2005 Superbowl trigged an angry reaction from China's netizens and so would have the recent performance of one of Japan's top celebrities.

China does not air Japanese broadcaster NHK's end-of-year singing gala, a tradition since 1951, but many know it is as important to the Japanese as the Spring Festival Eve Gala on CCTV is to the Chinese.

At this year's Japanese event, DJ OZMA suddenly removed all his clothes leaving only a G-string. Some 50 dancers behind him followed suit.

The shock caused major controversy and the broadcaster was forced to make an apology.

The clip is available on video Website YouTube and is widespread in China. On many online forums Chinese netizens have expressed their disgust. Some say it is especially appalling for a family show such as the gala.

However, some say the song is actually a Korean tune and the lyrics say something about undressing. A Chinese version, sung by Hong Kong pop star Alex To, also featured nudity in the music video.

It appears Janet's exposure at the Superbowl has provided titillating inspiration for Asian stars.
