A Chinese citizen was shot dead and a second one injured in an attack in the Siberian city of Chita early on Sunday, the Chinese consulate in Khabarovsk said on Monday.

An explosion occurred in front of the vehicle that the two Chinese were driving at 2:00 a.m. local time on Sunday (1700 GMT Saturday) in Chita. When the two got out of their car following the blast, unidentified assailants opened fire on them, killing one and injuring the other, the consulate said.

The injured was rushed to a local hospital and his condition is not critical.

The consulate did not give the names of the two, but said that Russian police have ruled out a deliberate attack on Chinese citizens.

Russian police are hunting for the attackers who are said to be of Russian origin.
