State councilor stresses armed police building

Chinese State Councilor Zhou Yongkang on Monday urged the People's Armed Police Force to improve its work and continue safeguarding national security and social stability.

At a meeting of the Party committee of the armed police, Zhou said the armed police had made significant contribution to the stability and the building of a harmonious society.

"Building a harmonious society requires the armed police to shoulder more responsibility and the task is of great importance and urgency," he said.

Party committees at all levels within the armed police must strengthen the ideological and political development, and enhance military building as well.

He called for more efforts in implementing the "scientific view of development" in building the armed police.

Core responsibilities of the armed police include emergency response, fighting terrorism as well as routine security duties.
