The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers has announced that China produced and sold over 7.2 million cars in 2006 to become second largest new car market in the world behind the US.

Last year, China produced 7.2797 million vehicles and sold 7.216 million, up 27.32 and 25.13 percent from 2005. Production and sales of passenger vehicles was a record 5.2331 million and 5.176 million, up 32.76 and 30.02 percent from 2005, and production and sales of commercial vehicles was at 2.0466 million and 2.04 million, up 15.25 and 14.23 percent respectively.
