Chinese police solved 1.947 million criminal cases in 2006, up 4.3 percent on the previous year, according to statistics released from a meeting of the Central Committee for Comprehensive Management of Public Security.

The statistics show that police authorities investigated 484,000 "serious" criminal cases in 2006, including arson, robbery, homicide, rape and kidnapping, down 4.3 percent from the previous year.

Police authorities also broke up 1347 criminal gangs and launched judicial proceedings against 296 of them.

"The general social security situation is stable," the meeting participants said.
