China's Supreme People's Court (SPC) on Wednesday issued a judicial interpretation of the Anti-unfair Competition Law in an effort to protect the intellectual property of renowned brands and products.

"The SPC's judicial interpretation is based on the court proceedings of numerous unfair competition cases heard over the last decade," said a SPC spokesman, adding that the aim is to improve intellectual property protection in the the country.

The interpretation, which goes into effect on Feb. 1, 2007, covers areas such as counterfeiting, false or exaggerated advertising claims, commercial secret infringement and slander.

The Anti-unfair Competition Law became effective on Dec. 1, 1993.
