    Super-large "Northern Lights" diamond exhibited in Suzhou

    A "Northern Lights" diamond, which weighs 26.62 carats and is priced 41.2 million yuan, was displayed at Shilu International Shopping Center, Suzhou on Jan 18, 2007. Dozens of technicians spent over two months cutting the diamond, which came from a North Pole mining area.

    Radio telescopes serving lunar orbiter now operational

    The large radio telescope at Yunnan Observatory weighs approximately 400 tons and has a diameter of 40 meters, photo taken on January 17, 2007. Four radio telescopes have been put into trial operation to measure orbits and receive data for "Chang'e I" Lunar Orbiter, to be launched later this year. They are located in Fenghuang Mount in Kunming, Yunnan, Miyun in Beijing, Sheshan Mount in Shanghai and Southern Mount in Urumqi, Xinjiang.

    6 miners rescued from flooded mine, contact made with 5 more

    Rescuers carry a miner who was found after they dug a tilted tunnel to reach one of the vertical shafts out of the flooded iron ore mine near Baotou, north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Jan. 18, 2007. Rescuers on Thursday found six of the 35 miners trapped in the flooded iron ore mine. Rescuers said they had made contact with five more miners trapped underground.

    Severe storm hits Europe, several killed
