Low-cost carrier Jetstar, a subsidiary of Australia's Qantas airline, will start operations between Sydney and Kuala Lumpur from Sept. 9 this year.

The budget airlines will operate three times weekly, flying on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday utilizing Airbus A330-200s with 303 seats configuration, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) said Tuesday.

"This will be the first Australian airline operating in Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). It is indeed a tremendous breakthrough for Malaysia Airports," MAHB Managing Director Bashir Ahmad said in a statement released here.

Jetstar will also be the second fully foreign-owned low cost carrier to fly to KLIA after the Cebu Pacific Airways of the Philippines made their debut in December last year.

The statement said Jetstar's Chief Executive Officer Alan Joyce announced the decision Tuesday in Singapore during an address at the 4th Annual Asia Pacific Low Cost Carrier Annual Congress.

Jetstar now directly serves 5 international markets from either Sydney or Melbourne flying an existing 18 weekly return services in the Asia Pacific region.
