Alstom ups exports from China group
font size

Alstom, a world leader in power and transportation, will increase the export of power generation equipment it manufactures in China to the world market.

Alstom Power Generation President Philippe Joubert said in Beijing yesterday the company aims to export 25 to 30 percent of its total made-in-China equipment to the world power market in two to three years.

Currently it exports 10 to 15 percent of its hydro-generation equipment and one-third of thermal power products abroad.

"We are marching into the third phase in China, which means we will focus on not only serving the domestic market, but also seeking more exports," the president said.

Alstom power division divides its operation in China into three phases: exporting products to China; establishing plants in the country and manufacturing for the domestic market; and serving both domestic and world markets.

The French industrial conglomerate recently won a bid in Vietnam through its subsidiary, Tianjin Alstom Hydro Co Ltd, to provide equipment and technology for a 180-megawatt hydro power plant with a contract value of $30 million.

It is the first time Alstom's Chinese subsidiary submitted a bid independently, including research and development, manufacturing and financing, Joubert said, terming it a milestone for its China operation.

To further its competitiveness, the company plans to double the production scale of the Tianjin plant, and increase staff numbers from 1,000 last year to 1,500.

In the meantime, it will enhance its efforts in Alstom (Wuhan) Engineering & Technology Co Ltd, which does 80 percent of its business in overseas markets. It will double the number of engineers there to 200 in the coming few years.

In Beijing, Alstom Beizhong Power Co Ltd, a joint venture with Beijing Heavy Electric Machinery Works, completed installation work last week and the new plant has started operation.

The joint venture, established last June, is the largest French-funded manufacturing project in Beijing. Alstom holds a 60 percent share and the Beijing partner holds the remaining 40 percent. Total investment in manufacturing facilities and equipment amounts to about 800 million yuan.

"All the plants in China have been integrated into Alstom's worldwide manufacturing network, and products made in China have reached the company's global quality standards," Joubert said.
