Poland to present proposals on EU constitution in March
font size

Polish President Lech Kaczynski said on Friday that his country planned to present its own proposals on the EU Constitution Treaty in March.

Kaczynski said in an interview with a Polish radio that Poland's proposals would take into consideration the present reality.

Warsaw hoped the European Union would become a close alliance among the European countries, but the close links would place a limit on every EU member.

The constitution, which was meant to adjust the EU's decision making process and institutions after rapid expansion from 15 to the current 27 members, would have scrapped national vetoes in some areas and created a joint EU foreign minister.

Kaczynski expressed his concerns over the proposal of a joint EU foreign minister, saying that the post could not consider the diplomatic interests of all EU member states.

Poland joined the EU in 2004 and adopted a skeptical attitude toward the constitution, which was rejected by French and the Netherlands in referendums in 2005.
