The Singapore information authority confirmed that an East Asia Crossing submarine cable system was disrupted early on Saturday morning.
A spokesman for the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) told Xinhua that the disruption may have affected Singapore's Internet operation, but not on the scale as seen during the recent disruptions caused by an earthquake in Chinese Taiwan last December.
The Internet and other telecommunications traffic have been largely normal for most users in Singapore on the morning, according to the IDA.
The IDA has requested the local Internet service provider StarHub and telco giant SingTel to work together to divert traffic to the unaffected cables.
The spokesman said contingency plans have been activated to restore affected traffic, and the cause of the disruption is under investigation.
