Chinese Ministry of Public Security (MPS)issued a circular Wednesday requiring local fire officials to conduct wide-ranging fire inspections prior to the Spring Festival.
During the Spring Festival and the Lantern Festival, the biggest holiday of the year in China, people use more electricity, oil and gas for family reunions and large parties, which increases the chances of major fires, read the circular.
The MPS has ordered local fire brigades to conduct fire safety inspections of department stores, hotels, restaurants, hospitals, cinemas and even Internet bars.
"They need to eradicate the hidden dangers before the festivals," the MPS said, stressing "if they do not correct the potential dangers they must close."
