The Manzhouli customs in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region cracked down several wildlife furs smuggling cases this year, and seized 1,881 pieces of squirrel furs, according to an official with the customs.

Jiang Bo, a customs director, told Xinhua that his customs, the largest land port at China-Russia border, cooperated with the Zabaikalsk Customs in Russia, joined hands in fighting against the smuggling activities.

Some smugglers chose to enter China in early morning or late at night, the time they took for granted that Chinese customs would be unfixed, said Jiang, adding that they often put the furs in the interlayers of their packages, or wrapped furs around their bodies.

"All their attempts ended in vain," said Jiang, stressing that the border port cracked down all the illegal activities.
