Shenzhen improving rail service for 2011 Summer UniversiadeThe construction of a 33-km metro line will be in full swing this year in the southern China booming city of Shenzhen, where a total of 155 km of metro lines will be built as part of the preparations to host the 2011 Summer Universiade. The No. 3 metro line, with the elevated sections extending 22 km, will be completed and put into use in 2009, at an estimated cost of 10.8 billion yuan (1.38 billion U.S. dollars), according to metro builders. The line will pass through the Universiade City in Longgang District, a major venue for the world university games covering 13.7 square kilometers. The city authorities plan to invest 40 billion yuan in improving rail service between 2006 and 2010. Five metro lines with a total length of 155 km will be in operation in the city by June 2011. The city now has two metro lines in operation, one of which starts at the Luohu station bordering Hong Kong. The two lines have a combined length of 21.8 km. Source: Xinhua |
