Japan's Nikkei stock index recovered the 18,000 mark early Thursday for the first time in six years and nine months.
In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 139.11 points, or 0.78 percent, to 18,052.32, a level unseen since May 9, 2000.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 14.72 points, or 0.82 percent, to 1, 801.95. The Second Section rose.
