Shanghai hosts record number of tourists

Nearly 1.6 million tourists have visited Shanghai in the first three days of the Spring Festival holiday season which began on Sunday, a record high.

The figure showed a rise of 10 percent from a year ago, said sources from Shanghai Municipal Holiday Affairs Office.

China Mobile Shanghai Company monitored 789,900 sets of cell phones registered in areas outside Shanghai between zero hour on Saturday through to midnight on Monday, a rise of 32.68 percent from a year ago.

In the meantime, China Unicom Shanghai Company monitored 580,100 sets of cell phones registered outside Shanghai during the same period of time.

Shanghai, which is situated at the estuary of the Yangtze River, is the financial and commercial hub of China. Tourists traveled to the city by highway, railway, air, sea or inland waterways.
