Tokyo stocks were vigorous with key indexes hitting respective seven-year and 15-year highs Thursday.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 195.58 points, or 1. 09 percent, to 18,108.79, closing above the 18,000 threshold for the first time since May 8, 2000.
The Topix index was up 15.67 points, or 0.88 percent, to end the day at 1,802.90, its highest close since Nov. 15, 1991.
Sumitomo Metal Industries was the most heavily traded issue in both value and volume terms, ending the day unchanged from Wednesday's close at 614 yen.
On the First Section, advancing issues swamped declining ones 1, 234 to 376, with 106 shares ending the day unchanged.
Trading volume on the main section decreased to 2,993.71 million shares from Wednesday's 3,057.00 million.
The TSE's Second Section index rose 39.75 points, or 0.92 percent, to 4,339.52 on a volume of 124.78 million shares. On the Osaka Securities Exchange, the near-term March Nikkei 225 index futures contract rose 160 points to 18,090.
