Russian ambassador insists on diplomatic solution to Iranian issue
font size

Russia's UN ambassador Vitaly Churkin insisted on diplomatic ways to solve the Iranian nuclear issue instead of possible additional sanctions casted by the UN Security Council against Iran.

Speaking to the reporters at UN Headquarters in New York in an instant reaction to the latest report released by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Churkin emphasized the need for a diplomatic solution instead of further harsh sanctions.

"We should not lose sight of the goal and the goal is not to have a resolution or to impose sanctions," he said. "The goal is to accomplish a political outcome of this problem."

Meanwhile, U.S. deputy ambassador Jackie Sanders respond to the report in a different way, claiming that the international community should stay coordinated and show common purpose to stop Iran's nuclear activity.

She said discussions would take place in the next few days to see what measures can be taken.

However, Council President of February Ambassador Peter Burian of Slovakia said no meetings were planned yet.

"We'll be checking the mood and the interest of the members to convene consultations within our presidency," he told reporters.

The IAEA said in the report filed in Vienna to the IAEA's 35- nation board of governors and the UN Security Council that "Iran has not suspended its enrichment-related activities."
